I don't think that its because they believe its the only demographic capable of being empathized with, I think its more that you don't necessarily see a lot of writers that are otherwise, especially from game companies that are based in heavily Caucasian or Scandinavian areas. Up until a couple of days ago I really hadn't given it any thought that my most anticipated game of the year, had a female lead, because it didn't matter, and don't get me wrong, I think it's super important thing to have strong female lead's, but that is most certainly not Aloy's most defining character trait. It's totally weird, because Guerrilla haven't even marketed the game with any real agenda, other than hearing the word 'she', you could replace Aloy with a Male character in all the trailers and the story would still fit perfectly, because this isn't about some woman fighting against a metaphorical patriarchal society, this is a person, who just so happens to be born a female, thrust into an unforgiving world, she doesn't fight her way through to show that 'hey guys, us women can do it too!', she's just another person who happens to be fighting for answers, IMO this is the best way to write almost any character, the story comes first.
